Experiencing signs of a stroke? Call 9-1-1 immediately.

Our stroke team provides expert care for stroke patients at all of our hospitals, including our award- winning Stroke Centers at Fairview Southdale Hospital, certified as Comprehensive Stroke Center through DNV-GL Healthcare and University of Minnesota Medical Center, certified as Comprehensive Stroke Center by The Joint Commission.

St. John's Hospital and St. Joseph’s Hospital are proud to be certified as Primary Stroke Centers by The Joint Commission, in recognition of our expertise in providing fast, effective treatment for strokes.

Timing is critical to the outcome of a stroke, so it’s important to recognize the signs of a stroke. Use this four-step approach with the easy-to-remember name: F.A.S.T.

Face — Try to smile. Does one side droop?

Arm — Hold up both arms. Does one arm drift down?

Speech — Try repeating a simple phrase. Unable to or slurred?

Time — Call 9-1-1 immediately if having even one of these signs of stroke.

If you act F.A.S.T., it can make a big difference.

Other symptoms of a stroke include:

  • Blurred or decreased vision in one or both eyes
  • Difficulty speaking or understanding others
  • Dizziness or loss of balance
  • Severe or unexplained headache
  • Sudden one-sided weakness, numbness, or paralysis

We provide our stroke patients with the latest treatment options along with compassionate, coordinated care. We use the most up-to-date imaging technology, so you get a rapid and accurate diagnosis as soon as you arrive in the Emergency Room.

Telestroke Technology

Our team uses Telestroke technology to bring the expertise of our stroke centers directly to patients throughout our health system. Using secure, real-time video conferencing, our stroke specialists can rapidly evaluate patients and review neuroimaging conducted in other hospitals in order to provide the highest standard of stroke care at every facility in our system.

Fairview Ridges Hospital, a high-volume stroke hospital that helped pioneer the Telestroke service, offers 24-7 availability of fellowship-trained stroke and neurocritical care specialists through Telestroke. Telestroke is part of Fairview and the University of Minnesota Health's ongoing initiative to provide the best possible medical care within patients' local community hospital.
