Gestational Diabetes Classes

If you’ve been diagnosed with gestational diabetes or elevated blood sugar in pregnancy, you are not alone: about one in 14 women will develop this condition. Fairview Diabetes Care provides education and support to help you learn how to keep your blood sugar in a safe range so that you and your baby stay healthy throughout your pregnancy.

Gestational diabetes education includes:

  • An introductory two-hour group education class, during which you’ll learn about gestational diabetes, get started with checking your blood sugar and receive your meal plan.
  • An individual follow-up visit one week after you attend group class.
  • Ongoing follow-up support by phone or e-mail until you deliver your baby.

Scheduling

Once your doctor has referred you for gestational diabetes education, someone will call you to schedule the introductory group class. You may also call 612-672-6700 to schedule.

Gestational diabetes classes are offered weekly at the following locations and times:

  • Fairview Clinics – Burnsville on Mondays at 8:30 a.m.
  • Fairview Clinics – Edina on Thursdays at 1 p.m.
  • Fairview Clinics – Fridley on Wednesdays at 11 a.m.
  • Fairview Clinics - Riverside Women’s on Wednesdays at 9 a.m.

If your doctor has not prescribed a blood glucose meter and monitoring supplies for you, one will be provided for you at class and a prescription for ongoing monitoring supplies will be sent to your pharmacy.

Before your first class: Call your health insurance company to ask which glucose meter brand(s) is preferred.

Bring to class: A written log of what you eat and drink for three days before class.
