We provide certified lactation consultants to help you successfully breastfeed your baby. Lactation support can include:
Lactation support is available both in the hospital and after you go home. In the hospital, our nurses will answer questions, help new mothers learn breastfeeding, and provide one-on-one assistance. After you go home, lactation consultants are available in many of our clinics throughout the Twin Cities. Lactation visits are often covered by insurance, but you'll want to check with your individual insurance plan by calling the number on your insurance card, to verify coverage.
We believe that the best nutrition for infants is human milk.
Breast milk provides all of the nutrients that a baby needs for healthy growth and development. In fact, most medical professionals encourage breastfeeding exclusively for the first six months of a baby’s life.
If the birth mother’s milk is not available, pasteurized donor milk can be obtained through a milk bank. Milk banks recruit and screen donors as well as test, pasteurize and distribute donor milk. High standards for donor screening and milk processing are used to ensure milk quality and safety. We support the use of qualified milk banks to help meet the need for donor milk.
The milk banking program at University of Minnesota Medical Center began in 2006. For more information on receiving milk or becoming a donor, email us at firstname.lastname@example.org or call 612-672-4122.
