Health and Wellness Needs of St. Paul

Surveys

In June 2021, Fairview conducted a series of surveys to inform and guide our plans for the Fairview Community Health and Wellness Hub in downtown St. Paul.

In late 2020, Fairview Health Services shared our vision for a centralized space that promotes health, wellness, and holistic well-being in St. Paul at the site of St. Joseph’s Hospital. Far-reaching research and community conversations over more than two years reinforced that a traditional hospital care model was not meeting the health needs of the surrounding communities. The COVID-19 pandemic further highlighted the wide health disparities that exist in our community. In many cases, those who suffered the most – especially communities of color – face more barriers to living healthy lives, including lack of access to equal and affordable healthcare.

These devastating effects of the pandemic reinforce the need for an innovative and integrated approach to improving the health of St. Paul, by promoting wellness and health, not just treating sickness.

In the early stages of our planning process for the Fairview Community Health and Wellness Hub in downtown St. Paul, our health system recognized the need to consult with local stakeholders to better understand the community’s greatest needs and the gaps or barriers that prevent people from getting the care they need.

In June 2021, we conducted a survey of more than 1,500 employees, current and former patients, civic partners, and St. Paul residents, online and by phone. The survey was offered in five languages: English, Spanish, Hmong, Somali and Karen. One third of the St. Paul residents who responded reported household incomes of less than $40,000.

Overall, the survey results reinforced the need for an innovative and integrated approach at the hub that focuses on promoting wellness and supporting healthy behaviors, in addition to treating illness.

    Better Representation

For our community. With our community.

“This unique site in the center of St. Paul represents a once-in-a-generation opportunity to transform the health outcomes of the surrounding communities, to attack health and racial inequities, and to focus on improving health rather than treating sickness. To achieve this vision, we must collectively reimagine our footprint in St. Paul to best meet the needs of the community. We are resolute in our commitment to the community. We are actively seeking to design this new hub of health and wellness with the community, government partners, and others who have dedicated themselves to service within this community.”
