Prioritizing equity and health in partnership with community
M Health Fairview is rooted in the communities we serve. We remain committed to providing exceptional care, delivering breakthrough research and innovation, and improving the health and wellbeing of our diverse communities. In partnership with community, our health system is advancing health equity and addressing the social determinants of health to do our part so our neighbors can thrive.
The M Health Fairview 2022 Community Impact Report outlines many of the ways that we are working with communities across Minnesota.
Below are a few examples.
The M Health Fairview Center for Community Health Equity and our Community Advancement team are building and leading three social determinant of health initiatives: Food is Medicine, Housing is Health, and Connection is Cure. Initiative programs include:
- The Community Cooks Meal Box Delivery Program supports the consumption of meals prepared at home for improved health outcomes. In 2022 alone, we distributed 30,600 boxes — that’s 432,000 meals.
- Our respite care program provides care and temporary housing after discharge from one of our hospitals for people who are unsheltered. During the five-month pilot last year, 20 people were accepted into the program. Of those, 11 people remained out of the hospital and emergency department, and four people accessed stable housing.
- Cultural brokers, a total of six Fairview employees based in local partner organizations, help people in diverse racial and cultural communities navigate healthcare, school, and other systems. Together, they served more than 308 new clients in 2022 and had 3,849 visits with clients.
Healthcare learning and innovation are part of the foundation of our academic health system. Clinical teams across the system are working with students to help them learn patient-centered, collaborative care. Through the partnership between research and academic and community medicine, discoveries can move into clinical trial faster.
- We provided 5,591 student learners 13,060 hands-on experiences.
- There were 1,231 active clinical trials that used Fairview facilities, services, or equipment.
As a committed corporate citizen, M Health Fairview is creating healthy, resilient communities.
- Employees contributed 6,060 volunteer hours to activities and events such as the Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity build, American Heart Association Twin Cities Heart Walk, and M Health Fairview Harvest at the Hub.
- Seven Employee Resource Groups strengthened patient, employee, and community experience, catalyzed key efforts including pronoun badges and mentorship programs for BIPOC employees, and cultivated a sense of visibility and belonging through events and education.
