In an age of emails, texts and Facebook posts, a hand-written note can mean a lot. This year, the staff at Grand Itasca Clinic and Hospital in Grand Rapids has managed to create 1,500 hand-written cards for the Holiday Mail for Heroes program.
Veterans in the 16 northeastern counties of Minnesota and Douglas County, Wisconsin, can look forward to getting some of the cards. They’re distributed to nursing homes and county veteran services offices, who help get them into the right hands.
Other bundles of cards go to the Duluth VFW for the free Christmas Eve dinner they serve to as many as 500 veterans and their families each year.
The Red Cross will help cards get to the 900 “Red Bull” Army National Guard troops from Minnesota who are deployed to the Middle East.
Whether it’s supporting our staff who belong to the Reserves, connecting veterans in hospice to other veterans for companionship, or sending 1,400 pounds of Halloween candy to service members overseas, Fairview is always looking for ways to salute the men and women who serve our country.
