Ahmed Mohamed was working as an on-call reservation specialist at a travel office when his mother saw an ad for a training program posted in the Cedar Riverside neighborhood in Minneapolis.
The program, called IT Ready, helps connect unemployed and under-employed young people from underserved populations to careers in information technology. Computers and computer networking came easily to Ahmed, so it seemed like a good fit.
After his successful completion of IT Ready, Ahmed launched his IT career at Fairview. We’re proud that, next month, Ahmed will have been a valued member of our Endpoint Project Execution team for one year.
Offering connections to careers
Fairview Health Services is an anchor employer of the Cedar Riverside Opportunity Center, meaning we partner with the center to hire graduates of their training programs. This helps us find great employees like Ahmed.
Our work with the opportunity center, through the Cedar Riverside Partnership, reflects Fairview’s commitment to support job opportunities that allow people to work and attend school in their own communities while earning family-sustaining wages.
“Ahmed’s experience is a great example of the vision we have for career pathways, in IT and other career areas,” explains Laura Beeth, system director of talent acquisition at Fairview. “We are hoping to connect many more Cedar Riverside residents to careers at Fairview.”
A spirit of excellence
Ahmed credits strong family support for helping him succeed in the fast-paced and challenging IT Ready training program, an eight-week intensive experience to develop business and soft skills. Recognizing the support he had from his family, Ahmed has made it his mission to motivate, inspire and inform people in his community about career-advancing opportunities like IT Ready.
Ahmed is always ready to engage in a conversation about professional development opportunities. Young people in Cedar Riverside know of his open door policy and refer to him as wayal. Given to Ahmed by his grandfather, this name means “wise, old soul.”
What advice does Ahmed share? “Be passionate about what you do, and put effort into bettering yourself,” Ahmed tells youth in his community. “Don’t give up, even when the odds are stacked against you, because giving up is easy to do.”
Ahmed has helped several other young Cedar Riverside residents apply for and enroll in IT Ready.
Build your career with us
Once Ahmed began his job at Fairview, he instantly began growing his professional network.
“I feel like I have another family outside of my family when I am here,” he says of working at Fairview. “I know being at Fairview is in my best interest.”

IT Ready is run by Creating IT Futures, which helps create an IT path for populations that traditionally have been under-represented in the IT workforce. Four out of five graduates find IT jobs with local companies.
