The future for jobs in health care is bright—Fairview Health Services makes dozens of hires a week with no signs of slowing down. If you, your child or someone you know has an interest in health care and a desire to make a difference in patients’ lives, don’t let worries of never-ending schooling stop you from pursuing career goals.
It’s important to remember that not all rewarding, well-paying jobs require a four-year degree. At Fairview, we have a huge need for workers in positions that only require a two-year degree or a technical certificate.
Here are four job roles in health care that don’t require a four-year degree. All currently have openings at Fairview, with a strong demand outlook for the future.*
1. Surgical technologist: Surgical technologists act as scrub people during surgical procedures, responsible for the correct use of surgical supplies and equipment, as well as maintenance of the surgical site under the direction of a registered nurse.
2. Medical assistant: Medical assistants support patient care by performing a variety of high-level functions such as maintaining clinical documentation, taking patient vitals and health history, documenting in electronic medical records and assisting with minor procedures.
3. Laboratory care technician: Laboratory care technicians perform laboratory specimen collection on various patient populations, providing safe and secure specimen handling and point-of-care testing.
4. Respiratory therapists: Respiratory therapists care for patients with breathing disorders by providing routine therapy modalities, such as oxygen therapy or aerosol therapy, while successfully operating related equipment.
