We are committed to our community

Fairview Health Services is committed to the health and wellbeing of our communities. For generations we have served the people of Minnesota, cared for our patients, and invested in the people and partnerships that make us stronger, together. As a nonprofit health system and an anchor institution—an organization rooted in our communities—we are committed to advancing health equity by providing exceptional care to all, improving the health and wellbeing of our diverse communities, and delivering breakthrough healthcare research and innovation.

Fairview recognizes that this commitment begins in and with our communities. This work cannot be done alone, our organization must collaborate with community-based organizations, local public health departments, and other health systems. Our efforts, resources, and commitments are investments in the health and wellbeing of our communities where we live, work, learn, play, and worship.

Why does Fairview do this work?

The expert care provided at our hospitals and clinics is a critical part of community health. Yet, we know that nearly 80% of a person’s health is influenced by factors outside of their provider’s office or hospital room. These factors, called the social determinants of health, include access to nutritious food, having safe, affordable housing, and opportunities for social connectedness. We are working to address these social determinants of health and advance health equity so our communities can thrive.

Highlights of our community investment

We are proud to share our 2024 Community Impact Report

In 2024, Fairview invested $1.4 billion in our community. Of that total, $680 million was invested in community benefit — programs and services designed to improve community health and increase access to healthcare. This includes charity care, education and training, hospital-based research, and community programs and services. The additional dollars invested are other community contributions such as care provided without compensation and discounts to uninsured patients.

The numbers are a snapshot of 2024 initiatives, programs, and services guided by the community health needs assessment in collaboration with the communities we serve. This process helps inform where our investments will make the greatest impact, promoting health and wellbeing.

This work helps to achieve our mission with initiatives that help people experiencing health inequities to address clinical, social, and economic factors that affect their ability to thrive.

Below is an overview of Fairview’s community benefit numbers, as well as other investments made in the community. Please note, this methodology is different from what’s used on Fairview’s Federal Form 990.

What is community benefit?

Our community benefit programs and activities focus on our mission to heal, discover, and educate for longer, healthier lives and must meet at least one of these objectives:

  • Improve access to health care services.
  • Enhance the health of the community.
  • Advance medical or health care knowledge.
  • Relieve the burden of government to improve health.
