Weight Loss Surgery

For some people, having bariatric surgery is the best way to prevent the serious health issues caused by excess weight. Fairview and HealthEast weight-loss experts will work with you and your doctor to determine whether or not you are a good candidate for weight-loss surgery.

As accredited Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program centers, we follow the MBSAQIP guidelines for obesity surgery. To qualify, you must have a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or greater or a BMI of 35 in addition to diseases associated with obesity. These disease may include:

  • Asthma
  • Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) - heartburn symptoms
  • High cholesterol
  • Hypertension
  • Obstructive sleep apnea
  • Osteoarthritis or degenerative joint disease
  • Type 2 diabetes

We know weight loss surgery is a very personal, life-changing decision. We also know it is often the best option to avoid serious complications of carrying excess weight. Our experts at Fairview Surgical Weight Loss Clinic - EdinaHealthEast Surgery and Bariatric Care, and University of Minnesota Health will work with you to be sure you have the information needed to make this decision, as well as create an individual plan to meet your goals.

Our surgeons specialize in performing the following minimally invasive bariatric surgeries:

  • Intragastric Balloon
  • Roux-en-Y gastric bypass
  • Laparoscopic adjustable gastric band
  • Sleeve gastrectomy
  • Biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch
  • Revisions per surgeon discretion

To learn more about each of these surgical options, we recommend viewing the online weight loss seminar for the location you’d like to be seen: Fairview, HealthEast, or University of Minnesota Health. To contact us, call 612-336-2727.

Weight Loss Seminars

To make sure you have the information you need to move forward with surgery, we require patients to attend a weight loss seminar. These sessions are hosted by our surgeons and give you a chance to meet them in person and ask questions. You are welcome to bring family or a friend with you. We ask that you attend the weight loss seminar for the same location you plan to have your clinic visits and your surgery.

  • Fairview seminars: Register online here or call 612-336-2727 to sign up for an upcoming seminar at Fairview Southdale Hospital. Attending one of the in-person weight loss seminars is required before you can schedule your weight loss surgery consultation.
  • HealthEast seminars: Register for an upcoming seminar, held the first Thursday of each month from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Call 612-336-2727 to register. We also offer the seminar in an online video format
