Weight Loss Surgery

For some people, having bariatric surgery is the best way to prevent the serious health issues caused by excess weight. Fairview, HealthEast, and University of Minnesota Health weight-loss experts will work with you and your doctor to determine whether or not you are a good candidate for weight-loss surgery and create an individual plan to meet your goals.

Do You Qualify For Weight Loss Surgery?

MBSAQIP Accredited Center

Weight-loss surgery is for people who are unable to maintain a healthy weight through diet and exercise alone. As accredited Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP) centers, we follow the MBSAQIP guidelines for obesity surgery. To qualify, you must have:

  1. A body mass index (BMI) of 40 or greater
  2. A BMI of 35 in addition to diseases associated with obesity, such as type 2 diabetes (T2DM), hypertension, sleep apnea and other respiratory disorders, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, osteoarthritis, lipid abnormalities, gastrointestinal disorders, or heart disease
  3. Inability to lose weight with diet and exercise

Insurance coverage for this surgery varies. Your insurance provider may have other criteria if they do cover weight loss surgery. Please contact your insurance provider for more information on your specific plan.

Weight Loss Seminars

To make sure you have the information you need to move forward with surgery, we require patients to complete a weight loss seminar. You are welcome to bring family or a friend with you. We ask that you attend or view the weight loss seminar for the same location you plan to have your clinic visits and your surgery.
