To develop its rankings, U.S. News & World Report evaluated the performance of more than 4,500 hospitals nationwide across 16 medical specialties and 10 specific procedures or conditions. The rankings are based on objective measures, including patient satisfaction scores, hospital volume, quality of nursing, and risk-adjusted survival and discharge-to-home rates.
The annual national rankings were first published in 1990 and are designed to help patients and their doctors make informed decisions about where to receive care for challenging health conditions or for common elective procedures.
