Comprehensive Hearing Evaluation
Fairview Audiology and Aural Rehabilitation Clinic provides comprehensive hearing evaluations for children and adults. Children are tested with age-appropriate methods including otoacoustic emissions and auditory brain stem testing for newborns and infants. Play-based testing is used for toddlers, preschoolers and school-age children.

Hearing Aids
We offer comprehensive hearing aid evaluations; fitting of a wide range of conventional, programmable and digital hearing instruments; and follow-up services. Consultations, surgery, fitting and follow-up for bone-anchored hearing aids are provided in conjunction with physicians specializing in otolaryngology (ear, nose and throat [ENT]). We also offer communication workshops for adult hearing aid users and their families.

The Lions loaner hearing aid bank for children and approved adults is located within our clinic. Hearing aids are available for extended loan to infants newly identified with hearing loss.

Cochlear Implants
For children and adults with severe to profound hearing loss who receive limited benefit from hearing aids, University of Minnesota Medical Center’s Cochlear Implant Program provides expert clinical care. Cochlear implants are electronic devices designed to restore some degree of hearing in severely-to-profoundly hard-of-hearing people. Unlike hearing aids, which amplify sound and require use of remaining hair cells in the cochlea, cochlear implants bypass the damaged hair cells in the inner ear by using electrical impulses to directly stimulate the auditory nerve fibers.

Services include evaluation of patients for implant, surgical implantation by ENT surgeons, programming of the device and aural rehabilitation with a speech-language pathologist with expertise in hearing loss. Care is provided by a multi-disciplinary team of experienced audiologists, ENT physicians, speech-language pathologists, psychologist and pediatric behavioral pediatrician. Fairview Audiology and Aural Rehabilitation Clinic offers a support group for cochlear implant patients and their families. More about cochlear implant.
