What is lymphedema?
The lymphatic system is a filtering and drainage system for excess fluid in your body. Lymphedema is a build up of fluid in your tissues that occurs when the lymphatic system is damaged or unable to adequately drain lymph fluid. Problems in the lymph system can result from tumors, infection, genetic defects, lymph node removal or radiation treatments, obesity, chronic vein problems or blood clots and sometimes surgeries.
Swelling injures tissue and increases the risk for infection. Tissues may harden over time, making treatment more difficult. It is important to start treatment in the early stages of lymphedema. If you notice any swelling or issues with scarring from surgery, see your physician and ask for a referral to edema care.
