Our shrinking world and mobile society means the United States is more of a melting pot than ever before. As people from foreign countries work to perfect English language skills, their foreign accents may make it difficult for coworkers, clients, patients and others to understand what they are saying. In some instances this is more than an inconvenience, it is a safety issue.
Fairview’s Accent Modification program helps foreign-born or native speakers with regional accents improve their spoken English. The program uses the Compton P-ESL Method and is taught by a licensed speech-language pathologist. Participants complete weekly home assignments using CD-ROM or personal practice tapes to apply new speaking skills in everyday life.
Seven-week and 13-week courses are available for small groups, with a maximum of five students per class. Private tutoring is also available.
Small Group Classes
This 14-hour, seven-week class is appropriate for people with:
- very mild foreign accents
- native English speakers with regional dialects
- those in need of general speech improvement
The 13-week class is appropriate for those who have an average command of English pronunciations. The course includes 12 two-hour weekly classes and one private tutoring session.
Private Tutoring
Both the seven-week and 13-week courses are available on a private-tutoring basis.
