INSTRUCTIONS FOR COMPLETION (Note: You do NOT have to register for this course. Completion of the electronic quiz will document your participation with the CE department.)


 

To view the presentation:

1. Log-in to the Fairview intranet (intranet.fairview.org). This can be done by portal access from home-- contact IT (612-672-6805) if you need help with your user name or password.

2. Go to the "Physicians Resourses" tab on the top right of the home page.

3. Select "CME-Online Grand Rounds."

4. Select the "Rehabilitation Services" link on the left side of the page.

5. Click on the blue title "Balance Skill Set 2009". This will launch the Mediasite application.

6. You can control how you view the presenters and slide show using the navigation buttons.

7. IT IS RECOMMENDED YOU PRINT THE POWER POINT HANDOUT, REFERENCES AND BALANCE TESTS PRIOR TO VIEWING THE PRESENTATION. To do this, click on the "Links" tab near the bottom left of the screen. Select the appropriate files and print them.

To take the required post-test:

8. After you have viewed the entire presentation, you will need to click on the above mentioned "Links" tab to take the electronic post-test titled "Balance Skill Set Post-Test". After you complete the quiz it will automatically be sent to the CE department for review.

9. The minumum passing score for successful completion is 80%. Therapists will have 2 opportunities to complete this learning opportunity for credit. You will receive notification by email if you need to retake the quiz.

10. Certificates of completion will be sent by email. Check you inbox for an email with an attached certificate.

 

SPEAKERS

Jena Hoffman, MPT

Jena received her Master's Degree in Physical Therapy from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2002. Before beginning her current role with the Fairview Home Care and Hospice team, Jena was a therapist with the Flexible Work Force and Acute Rehab Center. She completed her Herdman Vestibular Competency in 2007.

Barb Young, MAPT, NCS

Barb is a board certified Clinical Specialist in Neurologic Physical Therapy. She practices at the Fairview Balance Center in Minneapolis. Barb graduated from the College of St. Scholastica in 1992. She has focused on outpatient neurological and/or vestibular rehabilitation since 1998. She participates in the Vestibular, Balance and Falls special interest group of the APTA neurology section.

Becky Horton, DPT

Becky received her DPT fromt he MGH Institute of Health Professions in 2005. She developed her neurological skills in a fellowship position on the Stroke Unit of the Rehab Institute of Chicago. Becky joined Fairview in a rotating position, serving Transitional Care, Acute Care on the Riverside Campus and finally Acute Rehabiltiation. She received Herdman Vestibular Certification in 2008.

 

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This presentation will provide individuals with the opportunity to develop their clinical decision making skills in the evaluation of patients with history of falls and balance disorders.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

1. Describe the basic anatomy and physiology of the balance system.

2. Perform a skillful bedside or clinical balance evaluation.

3. Write functional and measurable balance goals.
