Speaker(s):
David Browder, PT, DPT, OCS has been teaching about the treatment based classification approach for low back pain for 6 years, including as a pre-conference course at CSM 2008.  A distinguished graduate of the United States Air Force Academy, he received his Masters of Physical Therapy degree from the Army-Baylor PT program and then completed several post-professional programs while practicing in the US Air Force, including a MS in Advanced Orthopedic PT and a post-professional DPT at the University of Pittsburgh.  Dr. Browder has also completed the Center for Rehab Services and University of Pittsburgh Orthopedic Manual Therapy Fellowship and has attained Board Certification in Orthopedics.
Dr. Browder practiced for almost 10 years as an active duty US Air Force physical therapist.  His military experience provides a unique perspective and he has worked in every setting from sports medicine to treating patients with poly-trauma while leading a deployed physical therapy clinic in Iraq. Until recently, he ran a ground breaking GME style internship program at Wilford Hall Medical Center, and has recently been key to the launch of the largest physical therapy residency in the nation by EvidenceInMotion.  Dr. Browder has authored and coauthored several publications in peer reviewed journals (JOSPT, Manual Therapy, Spine, Physical Therapy) and was awarded the 2004 Journal of Orthopaedic and Sports Physical Therapy ‘George J. Davies – James A. Gould Excellence in Clinical Inquiry Award’.  He is currently the director of a growing clinical practice in Austin, Texas and an assistant professor at the US Army Baylor Doctoral program in Physical Therapy.

Course Description:
Instructional Level 1 or 2 - Basic to Intermediate.
This hands-on, evidence-based course is a must for any clinician that wants to increase their effectiveness in treating patients with low back pain.The participants will learn a treatment-based classification system with proven effectiveness. This elegant approach has been one of the most widely studied approaches to low back pain ? with great results. In addition to up-to-date information, at least 50% of the course will be spent in lab with the goal of each participant leaving feeling comfortable and competent utilizing evidence-based manipulation interventions as advocated by the Manipulation Task Force. Don?t be left behind! Instruction of these basic high velocity, low amplitude thrust techniques is quickly becoming the entry level standard in DPT programs across the country. They have been shown to be the most effective treatment for acute low back pain and should be part of your treatment options. But this is not only a manual therapy course; current evidence for which patients benefit most from spinal stabilization exercise programs, activities to promote centralization and traction is also instructed.

*This course is eligible for MN Board of PT Category 1 continuing education credit.*

Course Objectives:
1. Perform a concise and thorough evaluation on a patient with lumbopelvic pain.
2. Utilize current evidence to effectively choose the treatment most likely to benefit a patient with lumbopelvic pain.
3. Confidently and competently perform manual therapy (to include manipulation (high velocity, low amplitude) techniques advocated by The Manipulation Task Force) for the lumbopelvic region.
4. Prescribe appropriate exercises to address identified impairments ? such as spinal stabilization exercises and exercises to strengthen the often weak gluteal musculature.
And most importantly, be able to apply this stuff to your clinical practice next week!!!!
