The Fairview Health Services CLS program enrolled its first class in June 2004. Partnering with Augsburg College, the CLS curriculum is the senior year that leads to a Bachelor of Science in Clinical Laboratory Science. Other academic affiliates are North Dakota State University (Fargo) , Minnesota State University-Mankato, and the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. Priority for admission is given to students from the academic affiliates. Students from other colleges will also be considered for admission to the program.
The format of the 12 month program provides theoretical knowledge and practical application in hematology, hemostasis, body fluids, chemistry, microbiology, immunology, immunohematology, endocrinology, flow cytometry, molecular diagnostics, and research. Following twenty weeks of lecture and student lab, the students spend 28 weeks in two or more of Fairview’s clinical sites: University of Minnesota Medical Center, Fairview--university; University of Minnesota Medical Center, Fairview--Riverside, Fairview Southdale Hospital, Fairview Ridges Hospital, Fairivew Lakes Regional Medical Center, Fairview Northland Regional Medical Center, and Fairview Red Wing Medical Center.
The program emphasizes lab principles and procedures, clinical significance and correlation, quality assessment, laboratory management and supervision, education methodologies, and computer applications. Graduates are eligible to site for national certification as a CLS/MT.
