The Clinical Laboratory Science program at Fairview helath Services promotes an educational environment for students to possess the following competencies upon graduation:
- Demonstrate possession of the knowledge and manual skills necessary to be proficient in performing the full range of clinical laboratory tests.
- Develop and analyze test systems, interpret findings, and select appropriate algorithms.
- Demonstrate proficiency in the analysis and decision making process and interpretation of regulatory compliance with regulations.
- Apply scientific prinicples and a scientific approah to solving laboratory problems, including the design or modification and evaluation of procedures and adaptation to technological advances.
- Establish and monitor quality control programs and assume responsibility and accountability for accurate results.
- Evaluate laboratory data to assess the validity of test results, verify test results, and determine possible inconsistencies.
- Recognize and correct safety and health hazards in the laboratory.
- Use and maintain diagnostic laboratory instruments.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the principles of instructional design, implementation and evaluation.
- Provide education and training to other professional and supportive personnel.
- Participate in the management of human, financial material and operational resources to lead to a cost effective laboratory environment.
- Display responsiveness to the needs of patients and discharge duties with integrity, thoughtfulness and care.
- Work effectively, efficiently and provide consultative interactions with other members of the healthcare team, external relations, customer service and patient education.
- Utilize effective communication skills in the clinical laboratory profession.
- Display possession of self-learning skills and be motivated to continue educational and professional development.
- Establish quality assessment/performance improvement systems for continuing improvement of the clinical laboratory sciences and patient care.
- Utilize information management to enable effective, timely, accurate and cost-effective reporting of laboratory-generated information.
- Demonstrate understanding and/or application of sound principles of research design/practice.
- Apply ethical principles in all aspects of work performance, interactions and decision-making.
