University of Minnesota Physicians, Minnesota Heart Clinic and Fairview create new cardiology program

University of Minnesota Physicians and Edina-based Minnesota Heart Clinic announced plans to merge their cardiology programs and, together with Fairview, will create a new, integrated cardiovascular program. The October 1 merger expands Fairview and University of Minnesota Physicians’ ability to meet growing patient demand for cardiovascular services at Fairview’s seven hospitals, 48 primary care clinics and throughout Minnesota. It also moves the three organizations toward a long-term vision for innovative patient services that promise to transform how cardiovascular care is delivered to patients throughout the region.

This union brings three award-winning programs and community and academic doctors together to create one of the largest cardiology programs in the state. Patients will be able to participate in the latest medical research available and benefit from research discoveries and innovations as they are applied directly to patient care.

Cardiovascular Executive Medical Director.
Robert F. Wilson, MD, is the new Cardiovascular Executive Medical Director for Minneapolis-based University of Minnesota Physicians. Wilson will provide physician leadership and strategic direction for the cardiovascular program. Board-certified in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Disease and Interventional Cardiology, Wilson brings more than 20 years experience in cardiovascular medicine and research. Learn more.

Fairview Ridges Hospital now offers expanded heart care capabilities with the opening of its new catherization laboratory. A catherization laboratory or “cath lab” is a procedure/ examination room in a hospital that uses state-of-the-art imaging technology, allowing your physician to see inside your arteries.

Fairview Ridges Hospital's cath lab is the only heart lab serving people living in south metro communities, and allows for better and faster diagnosis and treatment of heart conditions, including blocked arteries that may lead to a heart attack.

Minnesota Heart Clinic and Edina-based Fairview Southdale Hospital are rated
number one in Minnesota in cardiology and cardiac care for 2008 by HealthGrades, an independent health care ratings organization. Fairview Southdale Hospital is a five-star hospital and nationally recognized for being in the top 5% for the treatment of acute coronary (STEMI) syndrome, acute cardiac interventions for survival rate and door-to-dilation times. This means that from the moment a patient arrives with a heart issue, their examination and treatment is often immediate.


Fairview Southdale Hospital is a nationally recognized top 100 heart hospital.
Thomson Reuters, the world’s leading source of intelligent information and analysis, placed Fairview Southdale Hospital in the top 100 U.S. hospitals for cardiovascular care.  970 hospitals were evaluated based on their performance in treating heart failure, heart attacks, bypass surgery and angioplasties.

The nationally known Leapfrog Group named Fairview Southdale Hospital to its list of “Highest Value” hospitals in 2008. The organization evaluated 1,220 U.S. hospitals on their quality and resource utilization scores for open-heart surgery, coronary angioplasty, treatment of heart attack and pneumonia care.
 
Fairview Southdale Hospital is one of 13 in the nation to make the list, which includes having a top efficiency of care score for at least three of these four procedures and conditions. 2008 is the first year the hospital has been recognized by the group.

Insurance company Blue Cross Blue Shield of Minnesota today named Fairview Southdale Hospital and University of Minnesota Medial Center as a Blue Distinction Center for Cardiac Care  in  2009.  The hospitals met the criteria by  having better overall outcomes for patients and for consistency of care over time. Hospitals recognized as  " Blue Distinction Centers "  provide a full range of cardiac care services, including inpatient cardiac care, cardiac rehabilitation, coronary angioplasties and open-heart surgery.

We offer comprehensive care for every stage of cardiovascular disease; including prevention, diagnosis and treatment of heart disease and extensive cardiac rehabilitation services. Our cardiologists have access to the latest research and medical technologies to provide patients with the most advanced care.

 

• Cardiovascular examination and diagnosis

From simple to complex, our cardiologists are experts in diagnosing medical heart conditions. We use the latest, non-invasive diagnostic screening tools to detect a variety of cardiovascular conditions, including identifying conditions that often go undetected.


• Cardiac surgery
Our cardiologists work in collaboration with cardiac surgeons who perform many heart-related surgeries such as heart valve repairs, cardiac transplantations, aortic surgery, coronary artery bypass and minimally invasive cardiac procedures.

 

• Heart imaging and screening
High-end imaging capabilities such as nuclear imaging, stress echocardiography, EKG, cardiac MRI and CT angiography offer our patients the most advanced heart screenings available.


• Angioplasty and coronary stenting
Our coronary catheterization labs where angioplasty and stenting are performed, are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, enabling patients suffering from heart attacks treatment within 30 minutes or less of their arrival at our facilities.

 

• Electrophysiology (EP) cardiology
The science of diagnosing and treating the electrical activities of the heart, our trained electrophysiologists are skilled in ablation therapy and surgical device implantations such as pacemakers and cardioverter-defibrillators (AICD) in response to heart rhythm abnormalities.

 

• Cardiac rehabilitation
Our extensive cardiac rehabilitation services offer cardiac rehabilitation services at all seven Fairview hospitals and at clinics throughout the 13-county metro area. Together, an experienced medical team including cardiologists, nurses, registered occupational and physical therapists, exercise physiologists and other health care professionals work to coordinated successful recoveries for patients with immediate and chronic heart conditions.

No other center in the U.S. provides such a comprehensive assessment to identify early cardiovascular abnormalities.
