The mission of the Wilmer Eye Institute at Johns Hopkins is to contribute to ophthalmic knowledge and reduce suffering from blindness and vision loss at home and around the world through leadership and excellence in research, education, and patient care. Wilmer is synonymous with discovery and excellence in the field of ophthalmology, as evidenced over the past several years by being rated the best eye hospital in the country by both U.S. News and World Report and Ophthalmology Times. This reputation has been decades in the making, although the Institute made history from the day it was dedicated as the first eye hospital in the world to combine patient care with research and teaching.

The Wilmer Institute is world renowned as the premiere institution for research, patient care, and training in ophthalmology. Patients with serious eye diseases come from around the world to be diagnosed and treated by Wilmer's faculty, particularly since many breakthroughs in the understanding and treatment of these diseases have taken place at Wilmer through the years. This reputation for excellence is the result of Wilmer's investment in research to solve the real problems of patients.
