Discharge Instructions: Giving Your Newborn Vitamin and Iron Supplements

Vitamin and iron supplements are prescribed for many babies, especially breastfed babies, when they leave the hospital. These are given to your baby in addition to regular feedings (not instead of regular feedings). The supplements help your baby grow and develop normally.

How to Give Your Baby Vitamins and Iron

Follow the instructions that come with your baby’s supplements. If you have any questions, ask the doctor or nurse. Here are some tips:

  • Your baby’s vitamin and iron supplements come in liquid form. Use the droppers that come with the supplements to draw out the right amount for your baby.

  • Only give the baby the amount that has been prescribed. More is not better. Giving the baby more than is prescribed will not improve his or her development and could be harmful.

  • If your baby refuses to take the vitamins directly from the dropper, try mixing the supplements with a small amount of formula or breast milk in a bottle in the nipple. Don’t fill the bottle. (The baby might not drink it all, and won’t get the right amount of vitamins and iron.)

  • If the baby spits up or vomits with a feeding, you don’t need to give another dose of the supplements. But if this happens every time you feed the supplements, contact the baby’s doctor.

Fill in the amounts prescribed for your baby below. Your baby’s doctor or nurse can show you what these amounts look like on the dropper that comes with the supplements.

My baby should have _______ mL of vitamins _________ times a day.

My baby should have _______ mL of iron ________ times a day.
