Tonsil, Adenoid, and Ear Tube Surgery: Preparing for Surgery
Below are some things that you will need to do before your child’s surgery.
Preparing for Surgery
-
Bring your child for any tests the doctor orders. These may include blood and urine tests. (Not all children need testing.)
-
Don’t let your child eat or drink anything after midnight the night before surgery. This includes chewing gum and water.
-
If your child takes any prescribed or over-the-counter medicines, ask the doctor about taking them before surgery.
-
Help your child choose a toy or blanket to bring to the hospital.
-
Bathe your child and remove any jewelry. This includes hair clips and earrings.
-
Dress your child in comfortable clothes.
-
Call the doctor’s office if your child gets a fever, cold, or rash. Surgery may need to be postponed.
-
If you don’t have a car, arrange for a ride to and from the hospital.
-
Ask the doctor about other special instructions.
Sam gets ready for his operation...
Sometimes kids need a blood test. That’s when a worker at the lab takes blood from a finger or an arm.
Sam’s doctor wants him to have a blood test. So Sam goes to the lab with his mom.
At the lab, they take a little bit of blood from Sam’s finger. Then Sam goes back home.
