Honoring the legacy of a visionary
The new Carl N. Platou Emergency Center bears the name of a true hero. Carl N. Platou led Fairview on a path of extraordinary growth and innovation for nearly 40 years—a path that would forever change the face of medicine in Minnesota and far beyond.
A decorated war hero who served as a paratrooper in WWII, Carl was hired in 1952 as the administrator of Fairview Hospital which, at the time, was one of the smallest hospitals in the Twin Cities.
Carl and the leaders he developed were instrumental in expanding Fairview from one small hospital in the heart of the city to the complex system it is today.
