Evaluation
A doctor who is specially trained in sleep medicine will meet with you to understand your sleep-related problems. After talking with you, the doctor may recommend an overnight sleep study.
Sleep Study
During the sleep study, a trained sleep technician will use special machines to measure the quality of your sleep. The results of your study will be sent to the sleep doctor. During an appointment after your sleep study, the doctor will go over the results with you and make recommendations for treatment.
Treatment
Treatment may include medications to calm you or behavioral therapies that may range from meeting with a counselor to help calm unwanted thoughts and worries to making simple changes in your sleep habits that may improve your sleep. Simple changes might include such things as getting up if you are awake or totally darkening the room to make it easier to sleep.
Equipment (CPAP)
If your sleep study shows that CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) breathing equipment might help you, the sleep doctor may write an order to prescribe it. Using the CPAP machine will help keep your airway open so that you can breathe easier and sleep better. A trained technician will fit you with the equipment and teach you how to use it. Adjustment, maintenance and repair are also available for CPAP equipment that was prescribed by a physician. Ask the sleep technician about it. Our sleep doctors work with you to assure the best care possible as well as ongoing support. After your sleep study, our technicians are available to help you with any questions about CPAP equipment or repair.
