Pediatric Rehabilitation Services - Visual Rehabilitation

Helping kids use their remaining sight more effectively.

If your child has uncorrectable vision loss, Fairview’s pediatric visual rehabilitation program can teach him or her how to use remaining vision more effectively. Our therapists help kids with vision loss attain their goals for independence in their daily lives.

An occupational therapist will evaluate your child and create a customized treatment plan. The evaluation will include:
  • Reading
  • Written communication
  • Home, work and school-based tasks
  • Visual scanning efficiency
  • Computer and other technology needs

  • Optic Neuropathy
  • Retinitis Pigmentosa
  • Retinopathy of Prematurity
  • Stargardt’s Disease
  • Vision loss caused by stroke or tumors

  • Recommend adaptive equipment and technology that may help your child

Examples of treatment
  • Manage daily life (eating, grooming, dressing, safety in mobility)
  • Improve reading
  • Improve visual skills including scanning and eccentric viewing
  • Use magnification and other equipment, devices and technology
  • Provide information on available resources, including support groups and mobility training
  • Develop skills to become more independent and safely meet goals
