Delivering babies and women’s health care
Certified Nurse Midwives help you through the challenges and joys of pregnancy and birth as partners in your health care. Hear from patients who have involved a midwife in their birth process.
Fairview offers the services of certified nurse midwives (CNM) at Fairview Clinics – Riverside and Uptown in Minneapolis and in 2016, at Fairview – Paul Larson Clinic in Edina. Midwives partner with women throughout pregnancy and support them during childbirth and provide well-women care as well.
Fairview midwives help women give birth at University of Minnesota Medical Center or Fairview Southdale Hospital. Both hospitals offer the best in quality mom and baby care, as well as amenities to make your experience exceptional. Both have recently updated their birthing and postpartum suites and offer tours so you can see The Birthplace and the people who will care for you in person.
Our team has over 75 years of combined experience and is passionate about caring for women. If there are any complications during your pregnancy or delivery, your midwife will work with a consulting obstetrician to direct your care.

What is a certified nurse-midwife?
A certified nurse-midwife is a registered nurse who has a Master of Science degree in midwifery and holds a national certification from the American College of Nurse-Midwives.
A natural choice for many
Many women choose midwives because they enjoy building a strong relationship with their caregiver. Other women appreciate midwives' natural approach to prenatal care, labor and birth.
Midwives tailor their care to the individual needs of each patient. Preferring to minimize technological interventions, they stress education, counseling and continuous hands-on care during labor, birth and postpartum.
During pregnancy, midwives offer guidance on proper nutrition, exercise, sleep and travel. They encourage women to make birthing choices unique to their personal needs. They support a variety of labor options, including the freedom to move around, massage, a rocking chair, water births, a birthing ball, moist heat and pain medication.
Many people only think of midwives in connection to childbirth, but they do much more. Our team provides a wide-range of care for women of all ages – from puberty through menopause:
- Yearly gynecological exams
- Services for young women transitioning from pediatric care to adult medical care
- Birth Control, family planning, and pre-conception counseling
- Personalized attention to the needs of women during reproductive years
- Primary care services including treating infections and depression
- Peri-menopause counseling
