For most parents, having a baby is a straightforward and joyous experience. But sometimes a baby is born too early or becomes critically ill after birth. When that occurs, babies need advanced care they can get only in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, or NICU.

Our providers specialize in personalized, family-centered care for the smallest babies and the most complex cases.
- Our NICUs are staffed around the clock by specially trained neonatal nurse practitioners. They work in partnership with internationally respected, board-certified neonatologists from University of Minnesota Physicians.
- NICU teams include NICU nurses, respiratory therapists, licensed social workers, speech and physical therapists, lactation consultants, pharmacists, nutritionists and pediatric radiologists, who use their advanced training and the latest technology to care for your baby. Your baby gets complete, comprehensive care from a multidisciplinary team.
- University of Minnesota programs have educated 80 percent of Minnesota’s pediatric physicians – we train the experts.

The NICU at University of Minnesota Amplatz Children’s Hospital is a Level IV NICU, the highest level of neonatal care available. It is immediately adjacent to The Birthplace at University of Minnesota Medical Center, Fairview. The University of Minnesota Amplatz Children’s Hospital NICU was recently selected as a March of Dimes NICU Family Support program site—the only one in the Twin Cities and one of only two in the state.
March of Dimes NICU Family Support provides information and comfort to families of premature babies and other critically ill newborns being cared for in a NICU. Guided by former NICU families, the program is built on a family-centered philosophy. It addresses the needs of parents, siblings, grandparents and extended families.
Fairview Southdale Hospital and Fairview Ridges Hospital each support a Level III NICU caring for infants born at 30 weeks gestation or greater. If more specialized care is needed, your baby will be transported to University of Minnesota Amplatz Children’s Hospital in Minneapolis.
