University of Minnesota Physicians Heart's 50 cardiologists see patients at 13 Twin Cities and greater Minnesota communities. Patients benefit foam having local access to collaborative, multidisciplinary care teams and subspecialty expertise that leverage the resources of one of the world's leading research universities.

Preventive Cardiology
Heart disease prevention programs address the risk factors that may cause heart disease to develop or reoccur. These issued are addressed in detail, emphasizing patient education and advanced medical testing.

  • Rasmussen Center for Cardiovascular Disease Prevention -- offers a new, novel approach to anticipating and managing heart and artery disease. The focus of this program is on screening healthy individuals who may have risk factors, such as family history, hypertension, and smoking. The center uses a unique array of the latest, non-invasive diagnostic screening tools to detect cardiovascular disease and identify conditions that often go undetected but which can lead to heart attacks, strokes, heart failure and kidney failure.

Interventional Cardiology
Every year, University of Minnesota Physicians Heart interventional cardiologists diagnose and treat thousands of people from throughout Minnesota and the Upper Midwest with coronary artery disease. Cardiologists use techniques such as angioplasty and stenting to open blocked arteries and restore blood flow to the heart without open heart surgery.

Interventional cardiology services are offered at three Twin Cities locations – University of Minnesota Medical Center, Fairview; Fairview Southdale Hospital and Fairview Ridges Hospital. All three locations provide emergency care for people with heart attacks designed to save lives and reduce heart damage by minimizing the time it take to open blocked arteries. The Fairview Southdale program has earned national recognition for having some fastest times in Minnesota.

Minimally invasive Heart Surgery
Using robotic technology, University of Minnesota Physicians Heart at Fairview cardiovascular surgeons are performing heart surgeries with minimally invasive techniques. We use sophisticated, thin instruments, miniature cameras and robotic devices, especially the daVinci® robot, to perform operations that have long been managed by open heart surgery.

In minimally invasive procedures, the surgeon does not make an incision down the chest. Instead the surgeon makes two small incisions (less than two inches) on your side, between your ribs.

Heart Transplantation
University of Minnesota Medical Center, Fairview, performs more heart transplants than any other hospital in Minnesota. With 30 years of performing heart transplants, it is one of the longest running programs in the world. Our transplant surgeons have been at the forefront of a generation of breakthroughs in advanced heart failure and heart transplant. As leaders in innovative research, we are committed to bringing the science and art of medicine together to provide the best possible care for patients and their families. Our leadership began in 1978, when our physicians performed the first heart transplant in Minnesota. Since then, we have performed more than 700 heart transplants. Our surgeons performed the state’s first heart/lung transplant in 1986.

A hallmark of our program is excellent survival rates. Our transplant patients have a 75 percent survival rate after five 5 years, and a 64 percent survival rate after 10 years. The nation’s longest living heart transplant recipient benefited from our innovative care for more than 25 years following surgery.

Ventricular Devices
University of Minnesota Medical Center, Fairview offers one of the largest mechanical support device programs in the country. We are a national leader in implanting ventricular assist devices (VADs), performing more than 60 VADs each year. In some patients, the clinical application of a ventricular assistance device (VAD) has mended weakened cardiac tissue, offering an opportunity to understand the molecular basis of heart failure.

We are a recognized pioneer in mechanical circulatory support (MCS) bridge to transplantation clinical trials. We are one of a handful of sites in the nation approved to train surgeons in state-of-the-art transplant technologies that include Thoratec® HeartMate® II, Ventracor VentrAssist® LVAD, HeartWare® Ventricular Assist System and Levitronix® CentriMag® Pump

Congenital Heart Defects
Innovative, quality care for patients with congenital heart disease is available through University of Minnesota Physicians Heart. We offer state-of-the-art treatment for congenital heart disease including catheter-based closure of heart defects and dedicated congenital heart disease cardiac surgery. Our cardiologists and cardiac surgeons work together in one of the nation’s first hybrid procedure rooms which allows simultaneous combinations of minimally invasive surgery and catheter-based interventions

In fact, one of our physicians invented the Amplatzer device which offers a less invasive option to more conventional treatments—chiefly open-heart surgery. This reduces patient trauma and recovery time.

Adult Congenital and Cardiovascular Genetics Clinics
Adults seeking help with a congenital heart condition can find it at the Adult Congenital and Cardiovascular Genetics Clinic. The clinic offers a full spectrum of services for high-risk conditions along with a variety of special programs customized to fit patient need.
The clinic also features a genetic counselor who reviews your personal and family history for genetic condition that may affect your health or the health of a family member.

Vascular Services
The Vascular Institute brings together interdisciplinary teams to give you the most comprehensive assessment and treatment of vascular disease. Because vascular disease can include diseases of your arteries, veins and lymph vessels to blood disorders that affect circulation, we involve vascular surgeons, vascular medicine specialists, cardiologists, and radiologists in offering patients a wide variety of options. These options include the latest in innovative care translated from our world-class research.

Research
Cardiovascular disease touches each of us. It causes more than half of all deaths in the U.S. It afflicts people of all ages, robbing us of our precious newborns, our children, our parents and our grandparents. Now imagine a world free of cardiovascular disease. This is our goal at the University of Minnesota Lillehei Heart Institute.

The Institute brings together faculty and students committed to cardiovascular scholarship; facilitating their interaction and allowing them to share core University resources. Financial support from the Institute provides the margin of excellence that enhances our competitiveness in the global effort to cure heart and vascular diseases.

The Institute is built on the legacy of University of Minnesota icons that created a culture of innovation and discovery. These professors, together with their students and staff, blazed the trail in heart surgery; pioneered new therapies in heart failure; established the link between cholesterol and arteriosclerosis; and set the stage for world-renowned programs in organ transplantation. Today, established investigators who have secured highly competitive federal, corporate and foundation research grants working together with the next generation of young investigators to lessen the toll of cardiovascular disease on all of us.
