Artery and Vein Care
Have you and your doctor been talking about the overall health of your heart? Or do you suspect something is wrong and would like to meet with a physician?
As a leader in the treatment of artery and vein diseases, our highly-trained vascular surgeons and interventional radiologists diagnose and treat many conditions of the vascular system.
Fairview Southdale Hospital has received the "Gold Seal of Approval™" for vascular care from the Joint Commission. We are second in the nation to receive the accreditation, and the only facility to be recognized in three categories: peripheral vascular disease, abdominal aortic aneurysm and carotid stenosis, all potentially life-threatening conditions.
• Aneurysms
• Abdominal and thoracic aortic aneurysms: a weak spot in your aorta that bulges or expands and is at risk of bursting
• Peripheral arterial disease (PAD): common circulatory problem in which narrowed arteries or arteries blocked by plaque reduce the blood flow to your limbs
• Carotid arterial disease: hardening or narrowing of the arteries in your neck that bring blood to the brain
• Deep vein thrombosis (DVT): formation of a blood clot in one of the veins leading to your heart
• Varicose and spider veins
• Diabetes-related conditions

Artery and Vein Screenings: Protect your life and limbs
Early detection and prevention of vascular disease are crucial. Why? They save lives and improve quality of life. Artery disease is often silent. And, without symptoms, plaque can narrow or weaken arteries, setting the stage for strokes and heart attacks.
Screening can help you avoid:
• Stroke
• Heart attack
• Pain in legs and loss of legs
• Ruptured aneurysm
At Fairview, we offer you vascular disease screening in our nationally accredited vascular lab. You’ll find we perform all tests non-invasively (no needles), painlessly and quickly. It takes less than an hour for the complete screening package. You’ll also receive artery disease education material.
Who should be screened?
Individuals with the following risk factors:
• diabetes
• high cholesterol
• hyperlipidemia
• high blood pressure
• smoking
• sedentary lifestyle
• obesity
Additional candidates for screening are individuals with a family history of:
• stroke
• abdominal aortic aneurysm
• heart or vascular disease
Peripheral artery screening
- Test 1- Limited ultrasound test of your carotid artery to look for narrowing or blockage caused by plaque.
- Test 2 - Limited ultrasound test of your abdominal aorta to look for weakness or a bulge (aneurysm) in the abdominal area.
- Test 3 - An ankle brachial index measurement of your leg arteries to look for narrowing or blockage caused by plaque.

Results
A final report with recommendations will be sent to you and your primary care physician within one week. A Minnesota Vascular Clinic nurse or physician will call you and your primary care physician with critical findings for peripheral artery disease.
Interventional radiologists at the Minnesota Vascular Clinic will read the peripheral artery screening tests. Cardiologists at University of Minnesota Physicians Heart at Fairview Southdale Hospital will read the heart calcium screening test. The screening does not include a consultation with a physician.
If you have any questions about your results, please call the Minnesota Vascular Clinic at 952-345-4179 or call University of Minnesota Physicians Heart at Fairview Southdale Hospital at 612-365-5000. We encourage you to schedule an appointment promptly with your primary care physician, if you have abnormal results or wish to discuss your risk factors further.
The Fairview Southdale Vascular Screening Program is a collaborative initiative of Fairview Southdale Hospital, the Minnesota Vascular Clinic and University of Minnesota Physicians Heart at Fairview Southdale Hospital.
Program Screening location/equipment
Peripheral artery screening is performed in Fairview Southdale Hospital’s accredited vascular lab in the Minnesota Vascular Clinic by technologists who specialize in vascular imaging technology using advanced color flow ultrasound technology. The heart calcium scoring screening is performed at University of Minnesota Physicians Heart at Fairview Southdale Hospital by seasoned technologists using computerized tomography (CT) imaging done with a state-of-the-art 64 slice scanner.
