Treating her sleep apnea gave MaryAnn a new lease on life

MaryAnn, sleep apnea patient

Like many people with sleep problems, I tried to ignore them. I probably had sleep apnea for 15 to 20 years, before I was forced to do something about it.

Untreated sleep apnea interrupted my breathing dozens of times a night, and, as a result, I awoke each day feeling exhausted.

Dr. Michael Alter of Fairview Sleep Centers – Brooklyn Park told me that having sleep apnea is like sleeping in a room where an alarm clock goes off every few seconds all night long. Even if sleep apnea sufferers fall back to sleep immediately, they still wake up in the morning feeling like they haven’t slept at all.

I was so exhausted that I couldn’t function. As an art consultant who co-owns the family-run business, my sleep problem also led to low blood pressure and depression.

I was so tired that I needed my husband’s help to get to the doctor. The doctor recommended an overnight sleep study at a nearby Fairview sleep center. The study confirmed that I have sleep apnea. A sleep technologist fitted me with a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine to keep my airway open and worked with me until I could comfortably wear the machine and sleep through the night. That’s when my life began to change for the better. Now I have the energy I did in my thirties and I have regained a positive outlook on life.

Do you have sleep apnea?
One in every 10 adults may have sleep apnea that requires treatment. If you have been told that you snore loudly, or are excessively tired during the day, you may have sleep apnea. Learn more about sleep apnea, or take our sleep apnea online assessment.

If you think you might have sleep apnea, we can help.
At Fairview Sleep Centers, we offer overnight sleep studies to test for a wide range of sleep issues. Qualifying individuals can also conduct a home sleep study to test for sleep apnea.

Treating sleep apnea with a CPAP machine.
If your sleep study shows that you have obstructive sleep apnea, a CPAP machine may be used during the night to improve your sleep and breathing. Using the machine will help keep your airway open so that you can breathe easier and sleep better. Trained and certified sleep technicians at a Fairview sleep center will fit you with the equipment prescribed by your sleep specialist and teach you how to use it.
