Overuse Injuries

Numerous unhealed “micro-injuries” to a muscle or joint can result in overuse injuries, causing pain and loss of function. Common causes of these type of injuries are taking on too much physical activity too quickly or simply doing too much of one type of activity. 

Improper form – whether you’re running, lifting weights, swinging a golf club or tennis racket, or throwing a ball – can also cause overuse injuries. Although these injuries can happen to anyone, they are more likely to occur in activities involving repetitive motion and in participants whose bodies are undergoing the inevitable changes of getting older.

Because overuse injuries occur gradually over time and are more subtle than sudden strains, sprains, tears or fractures, you should know to look for signs including:
• Pain, tingling, weakness, swelling or stiffness in the affected area
• Loss of performance that persists and gets worse
• Soreness, aching or limping that last three days or more
