The University of Minnesota and Fairview Health Services have defined a process for the purchase and use of, and payment for research services provided by, Fairview Health Services and UMPhysicians. There are two underlying principles of this process:

• The researcher must accurately and completely describe the services required to do the research project. This includes accurately and completely distinguishing research from standard of care services.
• Fairview must accurately translate the researcher’s description of services required for research and provide the researcher with the number (service code) for the test or procedure, the name of the test/procedure that corresponds with each service code, and the research price for each test/procedure.
