Health care providers across Fairview are standardizing medical orders and care processes. Standardization allows caregivers to provide patients with treatment proven to achieve the best outcomes.

Electronic ordering, an example of standardization, allows doctors to order patient tests and receive results much faster than before. Doctors can review most test results and X-rays securely over the Internet to provide patients with more efficient care. Similarly, the use of MyChart allows patients to access their medical record online, submit a prescription refill request or e-mail their doctor.

The University of Minnesota Medical Center, Fairview has developed a system to prevent misidentification of patients or samples. Caregivers collect the patient’s sample, scan the patient’s wristband to ensure they have the right patient and label the sample with a barcode right at the bedside.

Fairview clinics also are working to reduce waiting times.  We’re helping patients be better prepared to get more out of their care. For example, many clinics contact parents by phone prior to well-child visits to gather patient history and concerns. Such preparation allows for better use of appointment time.
