The chart above shows the rate of delivering excellent care for hospitalized pneumonia patients has more than doubled since 2004. However, Fairview continues to aim higher than average and hopes to improve its score, bringing a higher quality of care to hospital inpatients with pneumonia.
Goals for pneumonia care include:
- Oxygenation assessment

Pneumococcal vaccination
- Blood cultures performed in the emergency department prior to giving initial antibiotics
- Adult smoking cessation advice/counseling
- Initial antibiotic given within four hours of hospital arrival
- Initial antibiotic selection for pneumonia patients who are able to develop an immune response
