Fairview Ridges surgeon gains national attention for hysterectomy technique
Surgeons attending a recent national conference were treated to an exhibition of a new, cutting - edge gynecologic surgical procedure that is being performed at Fairview Ridges Hospital in Burnsville.
Dr. K. Anthony Shibley is an Ob/Gyn surgeon based at Fairview Ridges. In early October he presented in Orlando at a gathering of surgeons specializing in advanced minimally invasive gynecologic surgery. Dr. Shibley first spoke in person to begin the conference, then returned back to Minnesota to perform a hysterectomy using his specialized technique. This hysterectomy was webcast live for the assembled attendees.
Dr. Shibley’s technique allows him to perform a laparoscopic hysterectomy by placing multiple instruments through one small incision, rather than several. The incision is concealed within the folds of the navel.
“The technology has advanced to the place where we have developed a new way to do this type of procedure,” Dr. Shibley said, noting that he instructs other surgeons on this method on site in Burnsville as well.
Dr. Shibley, who has done more than 300 of these procedures since June of 2009 and has lectured nationally and internationally on his techniques, said Fairview Ridges has given him the ability to innovate and share his methods with others in his profession. Dr. Shibley presented on minimally invasive surgery at the conference with surgeons from other academic hospitals, including Harvard, Duke and Vanderbilt. Having Ridges represented at this conference was a huge honor considering the caliber of the other presenters.
“We are truly leading the way here at Ridges, using advanced techniques and technology,” Dr. Shibley said. “This type of work and innovation meets Fairview’s mission of education, in addition to treating our patients.”
