Designated an ACR Breast Imaging Center of Excellence
Fairview Southdale Breast Center has been designated a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology (ACR). By awarding facilities the status of a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence, the ACR recognizes breast imaging centers that have earned accreditation in mammography, sterotactic breast biopsy, and breast ultrasound (including ultrasound-guided breast biopsy).

Mammography and diagnostic services
As women age, changes in breast tissue can occur. Fairview Southdale Breast Center’s team of medical experts provides a full range of breast screening and diagnostic services. Onsite radiologists who specialize in breast health interpret screening. Diagnostic tests are read immediately to determine if additional testing is necessary while you are still at the clinic.
New! Molecular Breast Imaging
Molecular Breast Imaging (MBI) is the latest in advanced diagnostic capabilities that can be used when additional imaging exams are required for women with abnormal mammogram results, dense breast tissue or other risk factors. The molecular breast imaging equipment at Fairview Southdale Breast Center is the latest technology available for this type of test. This new technology produces clear images while using 40% less radiation than similar exams using older technology.
MBI is recommended for women in need of additional breast imaging exams for the following reasons:
Comprehensive cancer care
Fairview Southdale Breast Center coordinates the full spectrum of care for patients with breast cancer, including general surgery, reconstructive surgery, medical oncology, radiation therapy and lympedema therapy.
Nurse navigator
Our nurse specialist is available throughout the breast cancer journey to answer your questions and offer support. With advanced training in, and extensive knowledge of breast cancer treatments and resources for patients and families, our nurse specialist is with you and your family every step of the way.
Special care for high-risk patients
Because breast cancers can be genetically passed on, Fairview Southdale Breast Center’s high-risk clinic genetic counseling and genetic testing for those who may be at high risk of developing breast cancer. If you are identified as high-risk, Breast Center staff works closely with you to develop an appropriate follow-up plan to reduce your risk of developing cancer and to increase the likelihood of discovering a cancer at a stage when it is most curable.
Clinical trials
Fairview Southdale Breast Center conducts and participates in clinical trials with the University of Minnesota to evaluate emerging medical treatments for breast cancer. Our breast specialists will work with you to determine if a clinical trial is right for you.
Resources and support
Onsite cancer support groups provide you and your family with a community of people who are experiencing or have experienced similar situations. Breast Center staff connect you with a network of community services where you can find additional support for you and your family.

- When you've had a mammogram or ultrasound that still has an area of concern needing further review
- If there is a palpable lesion (a lump you can feel) that is not seen by a mammogram or ultrasound
- If you have complicated MRI results
- If you cannot have an MRI for other reasons (claustrophobia, pacemaker, etc.)
