Do you experience frequent heartburn and a burning sensation in your throat, especially after eating certain foods? You may have acid reflux, also known as Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD). While some people are able to control their acid reflux symptoms with diet, medications and lifestyle changes, others may need surgery at Surgical Consultants in Burnsville to correct this problem.

Here’s how acid reflux works: After you eat, food travels from your esophagus to your stomach. Along the way, food passes through a one-way valve called the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), which is the opening to your stomach. This valve usually opens when you swallow, but it doesn’t operate normally when you have acid reflux. Food and stomach acid then travels back up the esophagus, causing acid reflux symptoms such as heartburn and difficulty swallowing.

Symptoms include:

  • Frequent heartburn and burping
  • Sour-tasting fluid backing up into your mouth
  • Symptoms that get worse after you eat, bend over or lie down
  • Difficulty or pain when swallowing

Treating acid reflux

Typically, lifestyle and diet changes, along with medication, are enough to control acid reflux symptoms; however, surgery is another option. Surgery for GERD essentially entails remaking the valve that opens into your stomach so acid won’t flow back into your esophagus.

At Surgical Consultants, our surgeons are trained on the latest techniques to turn the tide on acid reflux and improve your quality of life. We follow up with you after the procedure to ensure that you’re doing well and answer any questions you may have about your recovery.
