Joint Pain Fairview Sports & Orthopedic Care health

Many people who experience joint pain automatically assume surgery is in their future—but that isn’t necessarily the case. At Fairview Sports and Orthopedic Care, we can help most people with nonsurgical treatments, which can delay or eliminate the need for joint replacement altogether.

Our team of orthopedic specialists works with you to manage the pain in your knees, hips, shoulders or ankles. A sports medicine doctor will assess your muscle strength and range of joint motion, along with any swelling you may have. In some cases, you may be referred to a physical therapist that will develop a personalized program to relieve your pain, and teach you exercises to increase your flexibility and strengthen muscles around the joint. Regular use of these techniques can maximize stability and strength of the injured joint, and help to prevent pain from returning.

Sometimes simply adjusting your physical activities will provide pain relief. Moderate intensity, low-impact activities such as walking, swimming or using an elliptical trainer can improve pain, function, mood and quality of life. Maintaining a healthy weight takes additional strain off of your knees and hips, reducing the risk of ligament and tendon injuries—as well as even the pain and stiffness caused by osteoarthritis.

Working on stability, balance and flexibility helps your muscles work together more effectively, supporting the health of your joints. Stretching can help improve flexibility and increase blood flow to your muscles, which in turn can improve your performance and reduce your risk of injuries by helping your joints move through their full range of motion.

Other ways to manage joint pain include medication that helps to reduce inflammation and relieve pain. Your doctor also may suggest an injection of cortisone or hyaluronic acid. These methods are quicker and easier than surgery, and can greatly reduce inflammation and pain, allowing you to get back to your daily activities.
