"After many years, I am finally pain-free!"
My name is Ron. I’ve always been an active person. I enjoy golf, played basketball for many years and used to run to keep in shape.
Finally, I decided to schedule an appointment with my doctor. He took X-rays and discovered that I had severe arthritis on my right hip and moderate-to-severe arthritis on my left hip. He referred me to Owen O’Neill, MD at Twin Cities Orthopedics.
When I met with Dr. O’Neill he confirmed that I had arthritis and started me on Cortisone injections to help with the pain. Unfortunately, the injections became less and less effective and within several months, we knew that I would need to have a hip replacement.
I finally had a hip replacement on my right side at Fairview Southdale Hospital in November, 2011. My surgery was scheduled on a Tuesday and was discharged from the hospital on Friday. The pain from this surgery was a “WOW” factor and my overall recovery took months.
Soon after recovering from my surgery, my left hip started hurting. I had two Cortisone injections on the left side and eventually decided to have the left side replaced. Dr. O’Neill explained a newer procedure that he had for hip replacements called the anterior approach.
This procedure is a little different than the traditional hip replacement in the fact that they do not cut through the muscle. Instead, the muscle is moved aside while they replace the hip. Dr. O’Neill explained that most of the pain after hip replacement surgery is muscular and the anterior approach can dramatically decrease recovery time and pain felt after the surgery.
For the first time in years, I am pain free. While it seems like this surgery is just repairing an ailment, it really is changing your life. I am turning 60 this year and I feel as though I am 50 years old. I have started walking 25-30 miles per week. I am also looking forward to try golfing again now that I no longer have pain in either of my hips.
I commend the team at Fairview Southdale Hospital and Dr. O’Neill, Twin Cities Orthopedics. The attending staff was very caring and attentive. From the admission process all the way through discharge, they made sure I was comfortable and okay. I’m very thankful…I can now live my very active life with no pain.
