Overuse injuries - Health Education

Don’t let an injury sideline you

Sometimes you push your body beyond its limits pursuing your favorite sport or pastime. Other times you learn just what your limits are as your body gets older. And if you’re the type of person who is only active on the weekend or weeknights, your chances of an injury can increase.

Don’t let an injury sideline you

Overuse injuries are a result of several “micro-injuries” to a muscle or joint that doesn’t get a chance to heal, causing pain and loss of function. Improper form—whether you’re running, lifting weights, swinging a golf club or tennis racket, or throwing a ball—can also cause overuse injuries. Although these injuries can happen to anyone, typically, they’re more likely to occur in people who take on too much physical activity too quickly, partake in activities involving repetitive motion and whose bodies are undergoing the inevitable changes of getting older.

Because overuse injuries occur gradually over time and are more subtle than sudden strains, sprains, tears or fractures, it’s important to look for signs, including:
  • Pain, tingling, weakness, swelling or stiffness in the affected area
  • Loss of performance that persists and worsens
  • Soreness, aching or limping that lasts more than three days

If you have any of these symptoms, the specialists at Fairview Sports and Orthopedic Care can help. During a comprehensive evaluation, we’ll talk with you to find out exactly what’s causing your pain and performance loss. Once we’ve identified the root cause of your overuse injury, we can treat your pain and develop a plan to get you back to health with variety of treatments, including:
  • Physical therapy, including sports-specific programs for running, golf and thrower’s injuries
  • Chiropractic care
  • Acupuncture

By working with the providers at Fairview Sports and Orthopedic Care, listening to your body and pacing yourself, you can decrease the risk or avoid overuse injuries. Call 612-672-7100 for a same- or next-day appointment.
