Thatcher's story

Continuity of care
When it comes to being a busy parent, Karoline Buck knows all about that—her three active children each have different needs and interests ranging from scouting to sports to music lessons. To keep them all healthy and engaged in their activities, Karoline depends on Fairview providers, clinics and pediatric hospital services.

“What I appreciate most is the quality of care that we’ve received from the entire staff—nurses, doctors and lab technicians. They meet our needs and collaborate on our children’s health so that when we need something, I don’t feel like we’re leaving with questions unanswered.”

That kind of collaboration was important to Karoline when she recently brought her five-week-old baby, Thatcher, to the Fairview Clinic in Eagan. Thatcher had been up all night, and Karoline called the clinic the next morning. When they arrived, her doctor listened to Karoline and examined Thatcher. Pneumonia was suspected, and Thatcher underwent tests right away.

“He saw a variety of medical personnel in the clinic, all working together as a team,” says Karoline. “When it was determined that he indeed had pneumonia, it was so reassuring that the same doctor who saw us in the clinic would also see us in the hospital. He was continuing the care for us.”

The pediatric emergency department staff at Fairview Ridges Hospital was prepared for Thatcher’s arrival from the clinic. “We had to go immediately to the hospital, but everyone was very reassuring and there for us when we arrived. I’ll never forget that,” continues Karoline.

Fairview Ridges Hospital has one of the few pediatric emergency departments in the entire metro area. From the intake and family area to the patient treatment and observation areas, it’s designed to be welcoming for children and families.

Our providers are specially trained in pediatric emergency care—they understand children and their unique needs in an emergency or trauma care setting. In addition, our pediatric emergency suites are decorated with cartoon characters, sports symbols and other juvenile themes to help ease the anxiety a trip to the hospital can cause in younger patients.

Thatcher was cared for in the pediatric emergency department and admitted to Fairview Ridges Hospital. If he’d needed further pediatric specialty care, University of Minnesota Amplatz Children’s Hospital is nearby with more than 50 pediatric medical specialties. From clinical care to hospital care, we provide connected services and facilities for every member of your family.
