Schedule Your Mammogram

Schedule your mammogram!

Mammograms can detect breast cancer in its earliest and most treatable stages. As more and more women are having regular mammograms, breast cancer deaths are declining.

As women age, their breast tissue changes—but this is normal and not necessarily a sign of breast cancer. Regular self-breast exams can help you detect changes in your breasts; however, while you might be able to feel a lump that’s about the size of a quarter, a mammogram can detect a lump as small as a pencil eraser. Mammography and other screening methods for early detection and diagnosis have helped save thousands of lives each year.

Finding and treating breast cancer early is the best way to fight the disease. A mammogram is a low-dose breast X-ray that can spot problems and help doctors determine your overall breast health. Using special equipment that gently compresses the breast tissue, this test is fast and provides clear, high quality breast images.

We recommend women develop a mammography plan with their primary care provider by the age of 40; however, some women may opt to start earlier depending on their family history and personal breast changes.

Types of mammogram
  • Screening mammograms are used to look for breast disease in women who don’t show any signs of breast problems. The exam generally takes 10 to 15 minutes.
  • Diagnostic mammograms are used when women have symptoms such as breast lumps, pain or discharge. Fairview Breast Centers and selected Fairview sites provide diagnostic mammograms. A doctor’s referral is required for this type of mammogram.
