Youth Grief Services
Fairview Ridges Hospital
”After my husband’s death, the weight of trying to help my daughter through her grief while dealing with my own grief was absolutely overwhelming. I had never experienced anything like this and honestly had no idea how to cope.”
After Linda's husband passed away, she contacted Fairview’s Youth Grief Services for support. Youth Grief Services is a safe place that recognizes the needs of grieving youths – and the adults who care for them.
The program offers a range of supports and educational services for children and adults. Linda and her daughter attended grief sessions that helped both mother and daughter grieve. “I truly thank God for the amazing staff and volunteers as they, and this program, have made a tremendous difference in our lives,” says Linda.

Common Threads, A Conversation Among Us
Fairview Southdale Hospital
“On Aug. 2 at 8:02 a.m., my whole life stopped.”
At the age of 44, Amy was diagnosed with breast cancer and her life changed.
She considers herself lucky to have stumbled upon Common Threads, a breast cancer support series created for women under 50 at Fairview Southdale Hospital.
The series, which is completely dependent on philanthropy, provides a support network for women at various stages in their cancer journey. Some participants are newly diagnosed, while others are survivors of many years.
”Common Threads was important because no matter how strong your personal support network of family and friends is, at the end of the day you are still by yourself thinking ‘I have cancer’. Through Common Threads we find out that we are not alone and we can heal together,” says Amy.

Fairview Recovery Services
Rod doesn’t know where he’d be without the aftercare program at Fairview Recovery Services.
”The Phase III Growth group is the biggest miracle that Fairview has going,” Rod says.
Phase III provides a five year support group setting in which family members are invited to participate. Meeting weekly, the group of 8-12 people share in their recovery.
”I keep running into people who have long term sobriety who have been a part of Phase III at Fairview,” Rod says. “I recommend Fairview because, in my experience, the aftercare program stand out above all.

Meditation Sanctuary
Fairview Southdale Hospital
A new Meditation Sanctuary at Fairview Southdale Hospital now serves as a place of solace, peace and tranquility within the hospital. The sanctuary, designed to be respectful of people of all faiths, provides a place to pause, reflect, thank honor and heal.
”The Meditation Sanctuary is intended as a shelter for all who seek comfort and peace,” says Janet LaBrecque, a chaplain at Fairview Southdale Hospital. “Though there are many sacred spaces in the hospital, this space is set apart as a constant reminder to all the spirituality is integral to healing.”
All funding for the Meditation Sanctuary has come from gifts to the Fairview Foundation.

Fairview Hospice
When life expectancy is limited, Fairview Hospice staff and volunteers provide holistic and compassionate care with a focus on improving the quality of the remaining days of life. An interdisciplinary team uses both traditional and innovative ways of providing care for the whole person – mind, body and spirit.
Julie’s mother, Gayle, was a patient in Fairview’s hospice program. Julie says, “Thank you so much for all your help, support, guidance and caring ways. Because of Fairview Hospice we were able to keep mom at home to the end, which is exactly what she wanted! Thanks for making that possible.”

Adolescent and Children’s Inpatient Unit
Fairview Behavioral Health
The children and adolescent behavioral inpatient units merged in 2008, creating a 22-bed unit serving children aged 5-18.
”After combining the adolescent and children’s units, we needed an immediate resource for moving forward with the adoption of the collaborative problem-solving model. Fairview Foundation funds allowed us to meet this training need quickly,” says Karen Wendt, manager.
Through this approach, staff members work to solve conflict with the child, rather than without the child’s input. Staff members work to determine the causes of meltdowns, and educate the children about their triggers and help them and their families deal with them before they happen.
The results include significant reductions in the use of restraints and seclusions; reduction of staff injuries; more successful outcomes with children; and overall, the unit is a safer and happier workplace environment.
