Dizziness in Sports

One of the most common problems in sports is dizziness. It is important to realize that dizziness itself is not an ailment or injury. It is usually a symptom of some other underlying problem. Whether the underlying condition is minor or severe, dizziness should be addressed immediately.

Possible Conditions Related to Dizziness

  • Hunger
  • Shock
  • Heat
  • Dehydration
  • Illness (i.e., flu)
  • Injury
  • Sleep deprivation
  • Infection
  • Faulty breathing

First Aid Treatment for Dizziness
Because dizziness is often a symptom of an underlying problem, the best treatment is to first identify the problem. Ask the athlete what he/she thinks the problem is or ask the following questions and treat accordingly. Ask the athlete to sit down to avoid injury from collapse.

  • Have you eaten today? What did you eat?
  • Are you too warm? Too cold? (See Heat Stroke and Exhaustion)
  • Are you drinking enough water? How much have you taken in today? (An athlete should take in approximately one cup of water every 15 minutes when practicing in the heat)
  • Are you sick? Do you feel okay?
  • Are you hurt? (See Shock)
  • Did you get hit too hard? (See Concussion)
