Fairview's Sports Physical Therapy Residency Program is credentialed by the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA). The APTA is the largest national professional organization serving more than 66,000 physical therapists. The prestigious designation names the residency as an accredited one-year post-professional program for physical therapists seeking to advance their training and skills in sports medicine. It is one of only ten such programs nationwide and the only program in Minnesota.

“The designation recognizes Fairview's commitment to the development of high-quality multidisciplinary education and research programs for sports medicine providers,” said Fairview's orthopedic service line executive director, Dennis O’Donnell, MHA, PT.

The residency accepts one to two physical therapists annually and offers wide-ranging coursework, including working side-by-side sports medicine and orthopedic physicians, direct clinical care, on-the-field service, sports surgery observation and a research project. On completion of the residency, physical therapists are prepared to start a sports medicine practice and to sit for the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties Sports Clinical Specialist Examination.
