Mesabi Safe Communities Coalition
Formed in 2002, the Mesabi Safe Communities Coalition motivates community leaders, business owners and other members of the community to educate the public on preventable deaths and injuries from traffic crashes. The coalition serves Northern St. Louis County and eastern Itasca County. Both counties are near the top Minnesota counties for alcohol-related fatalities, with St. Louis County ranked the third deadliest. The coalition seeks to decrease fatalities and injuries related to impaired driving, increase seat belt compliance and increase community awareness about traffic safety.
The coalition, led by Fairview Range Regional Health Services, works with multiple law enforcement agencies, school districts, public health departments and local businesses to build awareness. The coalition has hosted a number of community events, including a controlled drink experiment, car seat clinics, Parent/Teen Driver’s Education Nights, bike rodeos, and much more. They have developed billboards and built strong support from local media. Since the coalition formed, seat belt compliance in the area has gone from 43% in 2002 to 71% in 2006.
