Bone up on osteoporosis

Stock_WomenActive14_LrgVert_FAN1002330Many women experience bone loss over the course of their lives, resulting in osteoporosis, or brittle bones. After age 50, about half of all women will break a bone due to osteoporosis. Some will develop a hunched over appearance called dowager’s hump that is caused by
bone loss.

While men also get osteoporosis, women are more likely to develop the disease—especially after menopause—due to loss of estrogen. Other risk factors include:

  • Family history of osteoporosis
  • Heavy drinking
  • Low-calcium diet
  • Small frame
  • Eating disorder or underweight
  • Smoking
  • High alcohol consumption
  • Low activity level
  • Medications

The silent disease
Osteoporosis is often called a silent disease because most people who have it don’t know that they do. Fairview Clinics and hospitals offer bone mineral density testing (dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry or DXA) to see if your bones are healthy and strong. DXA is a type of X-ray that is painless and takes only minutes to complete.

DXA scans are recommended:
  • as a routine screening test
  • when you’re at high risk for having weak bones
  • after you have broken a bone to see if weak bones caused the break, which could mean you are at risk for more broken bones

If your DXA scan indicates you have osteoporosis or osteopenia (bone thinning), you have several treatment options. Calcium and vitamin D supplements may help to stop bone loss. Diet modification and weight-bearing exercise may also help. Some people also benefit from hormone therapy or other medication.
