Leadership

Mark A. Eustis, president and chief executive officer
Eustis is responsible for moving Fairview toward achieving our mission of meeting the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of our patients and their families, and improving the health of the communities we serve. He focuses us on realizing our vision of being the best health care delivery system for America, in partnership with the University of Minnesota. Eustis joined Fairview in August 2007 from Ascension Health in St. Louis, Mo., where he was president of Regional Ministry Operations, overseeing hospitals and related health care services in multiple markets across the country. Prior to that, he served Barnes Jewish Christian (BJC) HealthCare as senior executive officer and was an adjunct faculty member at Washington University in St. Louis, where he integrated real-life experiences into the Case Studies in Health Administration course. He also served in roles of increasing responsibility at Detroit Medical Center and St. John Health in Detroit, Mich.  A native of Minnesota, Eustis graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business administration and a master’s in Hospital and Health Care Administration from the University of Minnesota. He has been active in national and local health care-related organizations, including the American Hospital Association and Mid-America Transplant Services. In addition, Eustis has worked with community groups, including the American Heart Association, United Way of Greater St. Louis and Boy Scouts of America.

James M. Fox, senior vice president and chief financial officer
Fox’s leadership and financial expertise are at the core of Fairview’s successful financial performance. His areas of responsibility are information services, supply chain, capital acquisition, forecast and budget, revenue cycle, accounting and pricing. In addition to his financial responsibilities,  Fox is responsible for managing purchaser and payer relationships, as well as negotiation of managed care contracts. He has held several positions since joining the Fairview team in 1976.  Fox serves on various boards for health plans, managed care organizations, preferred provider organizations, multi-specialty clinics and insurance companies.  Fox holds a bachelor's degree from St. Cloud State University and is currently a member of the Healthcare Financial Management Association.

Paula H. Phillippe, chief human resources officer
Phillippe is responsible for developing and articulating Fairview’s human resources vision. She is responsible for all aspects of human resources, including talent recruitment and performance management, compensation and benefits, employee and labor relations, training and development and human resources administration. Through her leadership, employees personify Fairview’s exceptional patient care. Phillippe joined Fairview in January 2008 from Marquette Financial Companies in Minneapolis where she was senior vice president, chief human resources and communications officer. In this role, she also provided strategic human resources and communications consultation to the Pohlad family’s other businesses. Prior to that, she was with RBC Dain Rauscher and Piper Jaffray, two financial services companies in Minneapolis, where she held a variety of human resources positions with increasing responsibility leading to executive vice president and chief administrative officer at RBC Dain Rauscher. As a human relations and public relations professional at the Fairmount Community Hospital, she wrote its initial affirmative action plan, revised its performance system in compliance with accreditation standards and used data to drive its marketing program. A graduate of the University of Minnesota, she holds a masters of arts in Industrial Relations and a bachelor of arts in psychology. Phillippe has been active in community organizations, including serving on the boards of the Children’s Theatre Company, the Greater Minneapolis Council of Churches, the American Heart Association and the Minneapolis Chamber of Commerce.


George Chresand, JD, senior vice president and general counsel
Chresand develops Fairview’s overall legal strategy and leads Fairview’s ethical adherence to federal and state law and health care public policy. Chresand currently oversees Fairview's legal, clinical research and governance functions and is Fairview’s Institutional Official for Research. A graduate of the College (now University) of St. Thomas, St. Paul, and the University of Minnesota Law School, Minneapolis, Chresand is a member of the Minnesota Bar, American Health Lawyers Association and the Minnesota State Bar Association.  Chresand is currently on the PreferredOne Community Health Plan Board of Directors.
He also serves on the Advisory Board for the Health Law Institute at Hamline Law School, as a member of the Internal Revenue Services’ Great Lakes Area Tax Exempt and Governmental Entities Council and has taught health law at Hamline Law School and through the University of St. Francis.

Prior to joining Fairview in 1993, Chresand was in private legal practice and worked as a merger and acquisitions consultant. His responsibilities at Fairview have included acquisitions, tax, governance, privacy, internal audit and compliance. Chresand developed Fairview’s original compliance program, lead its HIPAA privacy and security implementation and facilitated and lead Fairview’s most recent governance reorganization.

Lois A. Lenarz, M.D., A.A.F.P., senior vice president and chief clinical officer
Lenarz plays a lead role in Fairview’s clinical performance and patient safety advances.  With Alison Page, Fairview's chief safety officer, Lenarz leads the Office of Clinical Affairs and serves as senior medical director of Fairview's clinics.   A graduate of the University of Minnesota Medical School, Lenarz is a family practice physician with a strong interest in women's health.  She retains a part-time clinical practice in addition to her administrative responsibilities at Fairview. She also serves as an adjunct clinical professor in the University of Minnesota Medical School’s Department of Family Practice and Community Health.  Lenarz is a member of the American Academy of Family Practice, the Minnesota Academy of Family Practice, the American Medical Women’s Association, Minnesota Women Physicians and the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine.

Mary C. Edwards, vice president of public policy
With a nursing background and legislative experience, Edwards creates and follows health policy, advocating for your health and protection at the state and federal level. She has served as a health legislative assistant for former Minnesota Senator David Durenberger and as a nurse at Mount Sinai Hospital in Minneapolis and Riverside Lutheran Bible Camp in Story City, Iowa. Edwards has led several medical missions to Africa, Europe, North and South America and continues to work toward improving public health at home and abroad. She is a member of the American Hospital Association, sitting on the Midwest Regional Policy Board and has served on the boards for Minnesota Partnership Against Tobacco Treatment (MPATT), Premier Policy, University of Minnesota Nursing Scholarship, Edina Health Advisory and the Minnesota Public Health Association. She holds a bachelor degree in nursing from the University of Iowa and a master of public health-nursing degree, with an emphasis on administration and public policy from the University of Minnesota.

Kent Eklund, president, Fairview Foundation
Eklund, who has been the Foundation’s president since 2003, oversees all of Fairview’s donor relations and activities. He holds a Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Pennsylvania and currently serves on the boards for Park Midway Bank, Greater Minneapolis Council of Churches and the Search Institute. Previously, Eklund served as president of Cincinnatus, Inc. in Minneapolis, president and CEO of Parkside Senior Services, president and CEO of Ebenezer Society and vice president of market development with Lutheran Brotherhood (now Thrivent Financial for Lutherans).
