On the leading edge of medicine

Academic medicine provides access to new knowledge that greatly improves the quality of health care and patients' lives. It does this by:

  • fostering medical discoveries
  • educating each new generation of physicians
  • bringing new knowledge to patients with critical, complex illnesses that can be treated only with breakthrough therapies

Since 1997 academic medicine has been embodied in Minnesota by the partnership between the University of Minnesota, University of Minnesota Physicians and Fairview Health Services.

University of Minnesota Academic Health Center consists of six schools and colleges that educate and train the next generation of researchers, physicians and other health care professionals. They are the Medical School, School of Public Health, School of Nursing, College of Pharmacy, School of Dentistry and College of Veterinary Medicine.

University of Minnesota Physicians is a group practice with more than 800 physicians and 1,600 health care professionals and staff. It includes members of the Medical School's faculty who apply clinical breakthroughs to exceptional specialty care for patients at University of Minnesota Medical Center and University of Minnesota Masonic Children's Hospital as well as hospitals and clinics throughout the community.

Fairview is a large, nonprofit health care system which offers a broad spectrum of services. Fairview owns and operates the medical center and children's hospital, as well as many community-based hospitals and clinics.

Through Fairview's partnership with the University and University of Minnesota Physicians, we’re able to make the discovery of new treatments and cures accessible throughout our communities and beyond—to be the best health care delivery system for America.
